"It’s a scary thing trying to get help, but Bethanie took a lot of that anxiety and fear out of the equation. She went through what she could do for me, and how she could help."
- Marina, Althea Counselling Client
We have seen other counsellors in the past, but we still experience the same problems. How are you different?
According to our clients, yes we are are different. We take on a "no BS" approach accompanied with warmth and understanding. We tackle the problems our clients are facing head on - side by side.
What is the difference between a Social Worker and a Psychologist?
The professions are very similar, although there are some differences, that you as the client should be aware of. Psychologists diagnose and treat clinical psychological disorders. Social Workers cannot diagnose mental illnesses to the extent that a Psychologist does, but we have skills in Psychotherapy and have training in human behaviour with intensive field training prior to accreditation.
What can I expect at the first session and how will I feel afterwards?
The first session is usually a more positive experience, however it can be quite distressing if you are coming at a time of crisis or relationship breakdown. The session will be spent discussing your difficulties, what you would like to explore, and your goals for therapy moving forward. Often clients report back feeling hopeful and determined following the first session.
